CAFE and the Vox Media Podcast Network launched the second season of Up Against The Mob, which peels back the curtain on the real stories of the modern-day mafia, with unprecedented access to the people who lived them. In Up Against The Mob: The Springfield Crew, host Elie Honig revisits one of his most pivotal cases in the fight to bring down the Italian mafia – a mob murder that helped unravel a notorious American crime family. Over the course of seven episodes, Honig will chart the rise and fall of a faction of the famed Genovese crime family, taking listeners through the turf wars, escalating violence, and betrayal that culminated in the shocking murder of Springfield mob boss Al Bruno. For Honig, who spent fourteen years as a federal and state prosecutor in New York and New Jersey, the case was the culmination of six years of in-the-trenches experience, and he’ll bring listeners the inside story of how the government flipped mobsters sworn to secrecy, with interviews with many principals in the case, including the mobsters, their victims, detectives, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and more. The first episode is out today, with new episodes out weekly on Wednesdays.

“I saw a lot of shocking things and picked up some remarkable stories during my time as a mob prosecutor — but the Springfield case tops them all,” says Honig. “This story combines rivalry, greed, loyalty, bloodshed, heroism, and betrayal, with more twists and turns than anybody could ever dream of in the wildest work of fiction. But it’s all true.”

Honig is a CNN senior legal analyst, who previously worked for 14 years as a federal and state prosecutor. He successfully prosecuted over 100 members and associates of La Cosa Nostra, including Bosses and other high-ranking members of the mafia, earning the nickname “Hotshot Honig” from the Gotti family and public plaudits from Preet Bharara, who called him “organized crime’s worst nightmare.” During his career, Honig prosecuted and tried federal cases involving organized crime, human trafficking, public corruption, violent crime, and more. He’s also the author of the national bestselling books Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor’s Code and Corrupted the Justice Department and Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away With It. Honig writes the weekly Note From Elie column featured in the Cafe Brief newsletter.
