David Carl Oldakowski’s Personal Life Poetry Joins Exhibit at LibLearnX 2023

Having survived abuse and alcoholism, David Carl Oldakowski has many tales to tell about his life. But rather than a regular memoir, he shares his thoughts using a wide range of literary talent in “A Knight in Tarnished Armor.” Using poems, songs, and memoir pieces, Oldakowski’s book talks about the highs and lows of his personal journey.

The exhibits at this year’s LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience included many books that told the personal journeys of their authors. But for David Carl Oldakowski, the usual memoir didn’t seem like a good fit for what his writing could do. Instead, he wrote “A Knight in Tarnished Armor,” a collection of many heartfelt poems that he had made throughout his very turbulent life. It also contains a few songs as well as memoir pieces to give further detail.

Growing up, Oldakowski experienced childhood abuse in the form of school bullying. He was even institutionalized at the age of eight and then made a ward of the state, moving around the country well into his teen years.

The poems in “A Knight in Tarnished Armor” tell the many highs and lows of his journey, including his love life, his battles with alcoholism, his stints in Hollywood, the U.S. Navy, and even a seven-year prison sentence. Other poems had even been featured worldwide via global magazines while one scored him an award from the Emily Dickinson National Society of Poetry.

Many of the poems cover themes about second chances, overcoming loss, and finding hope in tomorrow. All the while, he gives praise to the people who still supported him through it all despite the hurdles of his life (and eventually encouraged him to publish the book for the world to see).

David Carl Oldakowski was a victim of abuse and was put into mental institution at 8 years old. He became a runaway and was forced to live in foster homes. He was given a 7-year sentence to prison for a fistfight that lasted about 1 minute. Despite all odds, he persevered. He now resides in Chillicothe, MO, where he works for the 105.9 “The Wave FM” radio station. David has also earned his Doctorate degree for Philosophy in Religion, and Master’s degree in Religion. He lives with and cares for his aging mother.
