Marcella O., California: “I really like this children’s book… I mean how can you resist the tiny Elf Owl and my favorite Mr. Long Wattled Umbrellabird… (the) illustrations are great…”

For children’s book authors, LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience has become a major conference that’s allowed them to show their newest work to America’s librarians and share fresh ideas. This year also marks the first time that attendees can explore their latest publications in a live, in-person event. Among these new works is “The Legend of Sky,” authored and illustrated by Dan Hayashi.

The book is one of the latest in Dan’s Animal Clan series of children’s animal stories and tells the story of Sky, a blue jay whose color renders him almost invisible in his environment. Mischievous yet compassionate, Sky would eventually use this gift to solve the mystery of the strange disappearances of his other wilderness friends.

The pages tell a clever tale of how Sky uses camouflage to evade trappers, create distractions and even make objects appear as if they toppled themselves. Ultimately, he then learns how the same trick can be used to hide his friends.

Dan’s unique take on animal children’s stories always speaks about the spiritual wonders of nature’s gifts and how they foster harmony with the environment. “The Legend of Sky” is no different. His illustrations cleverly combine with rhymes that describe how the little blue jay becomes one with the seas and skies. And like other books in the series, they strongly emphasize harmony over the harmful disruption of ecosystems.

Many attendees at LLX 2023 got an exclusive look at Dan Hayashi’s book. But for those who couldn’t attend, “The Legend of Sky” is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, along with other Animal Clan stories.
