“First parenting book you should buy; possibly the only one you’ll ever need.”

In her book, “The Joy of Parenting: An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Guide to Effective Parenting in the Early Years”, Dr. Lisa Coyne and Dr. Amy Murell does an incredible job of applying acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for parents, as well as their kids.

Displaying it at the recently-concluded LibLearnX 2023 gave attendees a direct look at how this form of psychotherapy transforms the lives of whole families while also explaining its resurgence during the last few years.

The general idea behind ACT is focused on acknowledging one’s emotions and experiences, whatever they may be. This differs from other psychotherapies that are aimed more at controlling or ‘fixing’ behavior rather than promoting mindfulness.

And within just the first chapter, Dr. Coyne and Dr. Murell shows this easily applying within the context of parenting. Whether it is the distress over one’s parenting mistakes or responses to a child’s bad behavior, Coyne demonstrates how important it is to first acknowledge the thoughts of feelings that come with such experiences.

Coyne also goes further to explain how ACT fills in quite a few important gaps left by more traditional approaches in parenting guides. Oftentimes, these approaches treat emotions and thoughts as intrusive obstacles to ignore, manage or even suppress.

But from her own research on behavioral parenting, she concluded that this neglect could actually explain why even the best parenting techniques don’t always work. Learning mindfulness and other ACT skills could be the solution.

The book is filled with various exercises that help readers towards this goal while also putting as much focus on helping children as well.

“The Joy of Parenting: An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Guide to Effective Parenting in the Early Years” is now available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
