“Bear witness to the transformative power of change.”

Growing up in Kenya, David Omondi knew firsthand how rich Africa’s stories were as they were passed down through generations. And yet, their unique motifs and style remain unknown in other parts of the world. That is why he wrote “Benedict’s SAGA” and made it part of the rich children’s book exhibit at the LibLearnX 2023.

Formerly called the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting, LibLearnX has been giving new children’s authors a place to share their ideas with educators and present them to reading audiences across America. It was just the platform David needed to showcase the influence of African storytelling in “Benedict’s SAGA.

“Benedict’s SAGA” begins when a boy named Benedict has a strange encounter with a magical chameleon, which resulted in the mystical lizard spitting in his eyes. Later, Benedict realized he could see things that others couldn’t. He would then go on to have many misadventures that involve the use of his new gift, while also keeping it secret (or the magic will disappear).

The children’s book is heavily inspired by stories told by David’s grandmother, as well as his own encounters with Kenyan wildlife. He was particularly fascinated with the chameleon, as he often enjoyed tales of its magical powers and how its color changed to defend itself.

With the help of illustrator Sergio Drummond, David brought Benedict’s story to life on the pages while staying faithfully to the spirit of the folk tales he grew up with.

“Benedict’s SAGA” is available on Amazon (in both paperback and Kindle editions) and Barnes & Noble. For more information, visit the author’s website at https://www.ovidsingh.com/.
