Grace Walker’s Deeply Personal Book on Loss and Renewal Displayed at LibLearnX 2023

When it comes to books on grief, healing, and the Christian faith, the really powerful ones come from a very personal place. Such was the case with Grace Hournbuckle Walker, a mother who lost her son to illness but found hope in deeply spiritual encounters she had right after their last conversation. She then wrote letters reflecting on that conversation before finally having the courage to publish her book, “Now I Can Think Myself to Mars.”

“Heaven is hardly ever on our minds as modern people, even as Christians. This story however is about how Heaven became very real for a little boy and a mother and the comfort that they gleaned from their Journey and the loss they suffered. This read is tender and moving; it’s real life under the sun on this side of Eternity. This is a book that you will carry in your heart for years and it will remind you that in this life we can live now with certainty about the life to come.” –Rev.Dr.R.E.B.

This year’s LibLearnX brought together numerous authors, librarians, and educators to share the newest publications. Among the book displays, some authors also share very personal stories with their work as the product of their own healing journey. A great example was Grace Walker’s “Now I Can Think Myself to Mars: A Son’s Final Goodbye, A Mother’s Journal of Renewal.

A mother and devout Christian, Grace experienced the devastating loss of her eight-year-old son to an illness but then had a deeply moving spiritual experience after their last conversation (paraphrased in the title itself).

This inspired Grace to spend the next two decades writing letters and poetry modeled after that conversation before she compiled it all into one book. Its subtitle reads, “A Son’s Final Goodbye, A Mother’s Journal of Renewal” and deeply explores how she found hope after her loss. Every line of conversation touches on Grace’s personal reflection on heaven, and how the people who have departed for it are more alive there than on Earth.

The book also tells the touching story of Nathan himself, and how he was a profound believer for a boy his age. Many of the book’s readers say that the letters genuinely reflected a strong, living connection between a recovering mother and a son who is in a better place. Together, they make a very touching presentation of what they believe people will experience with Jesus in heaven.

Readers who had been looking for a very heartwarming selection of Christian poetry and prose have certainly found plenty in Grace’s book.

“Now I Can Think Myself to Mars: A Son’s Final Goodbye, A Mother’s Journal of Renewal” by Grace Hournbuckle Walker is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
