Brain Science Meets Philosophy as Charles Yanofsky’s Book Gets Displayed at Heads to LibLearnX 2023

For over 30 years, Charles Yanofsky has worked in the field of neurology while diligently viewing it through the lens of philosophy and vice-versa. His book, “Beyond Biology,” shared his ideas at the LibLearnX 2023 while joining several others in the academic critique of treating science as reductionism.

“We all tend to get what I call tunnel vision. Our preconceptions both in the scientific world and everyday life can limit our ability to make new discoveries about life, science and about ourselves. Dr. Yanofsky has created a work that takes a bold scientific look beyond the tangible, the physical and ventures into the realm of the intangible, the metaphysical…” - Bob Weinstein, Lt. Colonel, US Army, Ret.

The LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, formerly called the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting, brings together educators, librarians, and authors to share publications that present new ideas and challenge academic paradigms. Dr. Charles Yanofsky’s “Beyond Biology” was one such book.

Published back in 2010, “Beyond Biology” was the result of Yanofsky’s many years working as a neurologist while reflecting on the human brain’s accomplishments throughout the entirety of human history and evolution.

But rather than seeing neuroscience as an end where all the brain’s secrets are unveiled, Yanofsky believes it leads to the beginning of something more. His book explores how the current pattern of scientific thinking may be seeing things backward, all while questioning the compartmentalization that separates neurology from philosophy and other fields.

This stems not just from Yanofsky’s years as a practicing physician but also from how his direct experience with patients demanded modes of thinking outside the mechanistic scientific method.

Other areas of the book also challenge the default focus of neurology on disability or the lack of ability, as opposed to discovering areas of potential. According to his own research, the latest findings on the brain indicate that the field has a lot more in common with metaphysics than otherwise suggested by blind scientism.

Dr. Yanofsky’s book echoes other academics who challenge a narrow, compartmentalized approach to their disciplines. Like them, he believes that scientific understanding should ‘ignite a new spiritual awakening’ and be used to better inform other fields of study (rather than purely restrict them).
