“This is Appalachia land of strange contrasts – impoverishment amid full employment, affluence and despair, misery and hope – and murder.” Ted Humes

Loretta Creech’s “No Tears For Ernest Creech: The Death of a Coal Miner in the Hills of Appalachian” looks into the author’s late father’s life as a coal miner, his death, and the aftermath of which that left an impact on the lives of his family.

The candid biography describes the details surrounding the death of coal miner Ernest Creech. Ernest was found dead inside a pickup truck, dressed in coveralls and soaked in blood. The discovery stopped an ongoing union picket strike and, consequently, changed the lives of Ernest Creech’s family. The book is a true story recounted by the author of how she, her siblings, and her mother survived the most difficult period in their lives.

Loretta Creech recorded many of these memories in diaries while she was a student at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. The author also recalled that in 1968, she shared with the late senator Robert Kennedy the story of her father.

Loretta was born in Hazard, eastern Kentucky, and later moved to Lexington in 1972 after leaving Eastern Kentucky University, where she met and married her husband from the central Kentucky region. The author has always loved writing, growing up listening to the stories of the mountains.

“No Tears For Ernest Creech” is Loretta’s first published book. Not only does the book serve as a homage to her late father, but it is also a remembrance of her mother, Gladys, who raised her children alone after the death of the author’s father.
