Be inspired by the story and adventure of Jessie White, a heroine of Italy’s unification.

Author Honor Mamath brings the story and adventures of Jessie White to life in her historical fiction novel “I Remember the Risorgimento: From the Memoirs of Jessie W. Mario” (Xlibris; 2020).

Written in the first person, “I Remember the Risorgimento” is a historical account based on the experiences of Jessie White in the Italian peninsula during the Risorgimento (Italian unification). Jessie dedicated her life and works to the independence and unification of Italy. She even worked as a propagandist for Giuseppe Mazzini, an Italian revolutionary and exile in London, and served as a nurse to the soldiers of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian general and patriot who led the Italian unification. Jessie later married Alberto Mario, a supporter of Garibaldi.

“I Remember the Risorgimento” tells the life and works of Jessie, a Victorian English lady who bucks the tradition of her time by taking on a paid job after graduation. She finds her vocation in writing and social causes. She starts out as a proofreader for the London Daily News, which later promotes her to junior correspondent after submitting a political opinion piece. She travels to Italy to cover the Italian War of Independence.

The book talks about the danger of war, political intrigues, and a surprise romance and features a strong feminine component. The names, places, and events in the book come from Jessie’s summary printed in the New Castle Daily Chronicle in 1861.
