In children’s eyes, everything seems magnified, impressionable, and trusting. The danger is a beguiling adventure for the little ones, and the vast world is a safe place for the innocent to explore – a dreamscape waiting to be discovered. In “The Sounds At River’s Edge: True stories of growing up on the Intracoastal Waterway,” author Bobbie J. McLaren lovingly lays together different stories to show its readers a world of wonder and imagination. Bobbie details a world before fast food, microwaves, and home videos, where the simple joys in life weigh heavier than how much money one has spent.

Bobbie’s writing is vivid and descriptive without ever getting to the point of waxing too poetic on the scenic views of the Intracoastal Waterway. It gathered excellent feedback from different book review-giving bodies.

BlueInk Review praised the lessons within Bobbie’s work. “Bobbie J. Mclaren takes readers on a nostalgic journey of childhood memories in this collection of short vignettes. Raised in north Palm Beach, Florida, in the village of Juno during post-war America’s simpler times (the 1950s to 60s), Mclaren weaves colorful tales of youthful escapades alongside the waterway, her backyard and more, and imparts lessons learned from happy and sometimes painful adventures,” the review stated.

A critique from Kirkus Reviews describes “The Sounds At River’s Edge” as a memoir that offers personal tales of an idyllic Florida childhood and a colorful, engaging, and warmly nostalgic look at an old-fashioned coastal childhood.

The book also gathered a positive review from Clarion Review. “The autobiographical essays of Bobbie J. McLaren’s The Sounds at River’s Edge cover an idyllic 1950s childhood in rural Florida with rich details and notes of faith. Set in a gorgeous natural landscape and in times when people trusted each other enough never to lock their doors, The Sounds at River’s Edge is a fondly shared, honest memoir that glances back at simpler times that were anything but dull,” a book review from Clarion Review said.

“The Sounds At River’s Edge” is Bobbie’s reflective account of a child with a vivid imagination surrounded with familial love and beauty. It is also a narrative of living at the moment - a moment of joy and pain, tears and laughter in a world that seemed slower but has witnessed daily historical change, unlike any other time in the 20th century.
