American Express Foundation Supports Emergency Response in Turkey and Syria

A version of this memo went out earlier to our colleagues from Jennifer Skyler, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and Chairperson of American Express Foundation:

As I am sure you have seen, earlier this week powerful earthquakes struck in southern Turkey near the Syrian border, followed by significant aftershocks. This has been one of the most devastating disasters the region has experienced in many decades with a heartbreaking death toll that is expected to rise over the coming days.  Hundreds of thousands have been injured, left without homes in freezing conditions or lost loved ones.

The American Express Foundation is committing $250,000 to support emergency response and relief efforts on the ground through the following organizations:  

• $125,000 to the American Red Cross to support coordinated relief efforts by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), such as shelter, food, blankets, clean water, essential supplies and other services.   
• $125,000 to International Medical Corps to offer medical care, vital medical supplies and mental health services. 

We will also match colleague contributions toward disaster relief through the American Express Match program. 

Our thoughts are with all of those directly impacted by the earthquakes, as well as those who have family and loved ones in the region.
