Washington D.C. – WEBWIRE

For President Biden’s upcoming State of the Union address, NPR News will offer special multimedia coverage including - for the first time ever - two parallel broadcasts for both English speakers and bilingual Spanish speakers. The English version will be hosted by All Things Considered’s Ari Shapiro and the bilingual version will be hosted by Morning Edition’s A Martínez. Coverage will air from 9:00PM - 11:30PM(ET) on many NPR Member stations across the country (www.npr.org/stations), and live stream at NPR.org, which will also feature video, live blog commentary and fact checking from NPR reporters (end time of broadcast is subject to change).

NPR’s special coverage will feature:

  • Broadcast: Participating NPR Member stations will have live broadcast (radio) coverage of the speech, and many stations will also carry bilingual coverage.
  • Video streaming: Video streaming of the speech including a translated Spanish version will be available at NPR.org, Facebook, Twitter and participating NPR Member station websites and apps.
  • A Panel of Experts: For reaction to the speech, Shapiro will consult a panel of issue focused journalists from NPR’s Washington, Business and International desks, including national political correspondent Mara Liasson, White House correspondent Scott Detrow, chief economics correspondent Scott Horsley, and diplomatic correspondent Michelle Kelemen.
  • For the bilingual broadcast, Martínez will be joined by White House correspondent Franco Ordoñez and congressional correspondent Claudia Grisales in Washington, international correspondent Eyder Peralta from Mexico City and political reporter Sergio Martínez-Beltrán from member station KUT and the Texas Newsroom, a public radio journalism collaboration.
  • Live Reports from Inside the Capitol: NPR Congressional reporter Deidre Walsh will file live reports on reactions to the State of the Union coming from within the House chamber.
  • Live Blog & Fact Checking: A team of NPR reporters will provide real-time analysis and fact-checking at NPR.org
  • Post Speech Podcast: Following the speech, NPR’s best political reporters will drop a new episode of of the NPR Politics Podcast
  • Social Media: Follow NPR’s social accounts for more SOTU coverage. The NPR Twitter account will host the English language coverage, and the NPR Morning Edition Twitter and NPR Oye accounts on Twitter will co-host the bilingual live stream. Both video streams will also be available on NPR’s Facebook page.
