“A relaxed and ‘easy’ read, interesting insight to the advent of women into policing in the sixties/ seventies from assisting to frontline and equal in every way to the Bobbies.” – Ian Withers.

Maureen Coonrod publishes her fascinating autobiography “Bobby Dazzlers: My Story as a UK Policewoman in the ‘70s,” which tells about her life when she decided to join the Metropolitan Police Force.

“Bobby Dazzlers” is a story of the trials Maureen endured and triumphed over during her training, probationary period, and subsequent attachment to various departments. Since the Equal Rights Amendment hadn’t been passed at the time, a woman working in this field faced significant obstacles.

When Maureen first joined the women’s police force in 1968 in the United Kingdom, she was just another typical British girl. She gained a much greater understanding of the darker side of humanity that the vast majority of people will never encounter. Some of these included being used as a lure by a serial rapist armed only with a whistle, mingling with drug addicts, interacting with neglected children, and dealing with dead bodies.

After having various professions, including secretary and ground hostess, Maureen Coonrod joined the British Police Force. A female police officer is called a WPC (woman police constable). Several nicknames were used, i.e., W Plonker and Bobby Dazzler, although not commonly used. She served from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s before retiring with an exemplary service record.

Since leaving the force, she has run a hotel, worked as a language school agent, and worked in a managerial position for a district sales company. In 2004, she immigrated to the United States from the United Kingdom and became a US citizen. Currently, Maureen works as a realtor in Florida. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading crime fiction and thrillers, traveling, listening to country music, and spending time with her dog, Reba, named after country legend Reba McEntire.
