“Daddy, What is Racism?” by Jenny White, is a Book Worth Reading and Worth Sharing

What is racism? By definition, rac· ism ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm also -ˌshi- : A belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. (Merriam-Webster).

But with Jenny White’s book “Daddy, what is racism?” you will get to learn what it truly means beyond a dictionary definition. The reader will get a deeper understanding of the nature of this and why there is such a thing.

The book is about a kid named Semaj and his little sister. They went out to play and he noticed a little girl next door sitting with her new bike. He went over to the little girl and introduced himself and asked her if he can ride her bike. The girl said “Yes.” And as he was walking down the sidewalk with the bike, he suddenly heard someone screamed “Come back with that bike!” suddenly there were hands dragging him and the bike back towards the house. He was screaming, “You were stealing the bike and I’m calling the cops.”

The story narrates how Semaj and his sister wondered why they were accused of stealing despite asking politely if they can borrow the bike. This book discusses how a parent explained a complex word to their children and understand what it meant. Getting to grasp the concept of racism in a child’s perspective and letting them comprehend thoroughly the act or judgment.

The book by Jenny White is well worth reading, especially if you’re a parent, teacher, or someone else who wants to discuss this subject with kids to help them understand it and how to handle it.

Jenny White is a retired Detroit public school special education teacher, married with four children and twelve grandchildren, and as of September 21, 2016, she is a great-grandmother of one. She is a children’s book author of the Junior Rabbit series. She volunteers at the Ronald Mcdonald House Charities and she is also a member of the Lion’s Club International. She travels frequently and is very active in her church. She is also the host of her radio podcast on Friday nights EST at 8 pm entitled “Let’s Talk About It With Jenny White” on WPJ Media 104.5.
