There is Officially No Good Reason Not to Donate Food

WEBWIRE

Replate spoke on Capitol Hill last year in support of the Food Donation Improvement Act…well, we’ve got news!

President Biden signed the addendum into law.

Speaking up does make a difference!

And from our perspective, a big one.

Prior to the FDIA, businesses could donate food without liability under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act. If they provided the contribution in good faith, they didn’t need to worry about downstream repercussions.

However, there were limitations.

For one, businesses had to donate food through a nonprofit organization. This sometimes deterred people from making the effort, and food ended up in the trash.

Now, companies can directly share meals with someone in need.

The FDIA also protects businesses that are reselling surplus food at a discounted price. For those of you loving companies like Too Good To Go (us!), you will likely see a lot more moving forward.

One last thing we’re super excited about - better expiration labels!

Under the new provisions, the Department of Agriculture must issue regulations that clarify quality and labeling standards that donated food products must meet to be eligible for protection.

Basically, the FDIA is a win-win-win for Replate, our planet and communities!

We hope to see a lot more food donations moving forward.
