“The Journey” has been submitted as an entry to “The Eric Hoffer Book Award” for 2023.

Pat Marquis publishes this couple’s biography, “The Journey,” which tells a riveting tale of bravery, dedication, and adventure in the American West.

“On March 17th, 2015, my wife Rhonda, ‘Horse-n-Around,’ and I, the ‘Wrangler,’ embarked on an epic journey. My role as Wrangler was to manage all the logistics of our travels, with me driving our new Dodge truck with the ‘Hilton’ attached and meeting my bride along the route wherever possible. Every day, she’d be horseback on a chestnut, a grey, or a bay, riding northerly on the Pacific Crest Trail, starting at the Mexican border and hoping to reach the Canadian border, 2,660 miles away.” Pat Marquis shared.

Rhonda rode nearly 1,450 miles on the PCT, entirely alone except for the first 3 miles, the last 53 miles when Pat was able to join her. Rhonda would be on the crest of the mountain slopes with Pat in the valleys and nether lands, looking for a likely spot for an overnight stay. At every twist in the road or bend in the trail people never knew what they would encounter. But that’s the adventure part of the story, isn’t it?

Rhonda said it best, “Will I ever go back and finish those miles I missed? I can’t say so yet. I’ll have to see how I feel in the future. This was a big year for Pat & I because I turned 60, Pat turns 70 & we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. I’m glad I was able to undertake this adventure at this time. I owe a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to my husband, Patrick, for all the support, both mentally and physically, that he gave me as I worked my way through the challenges of this trail. I’m so very pleased that he rode with me at the end!”

This book is fantastic for people of any age who have ever entertained the thought of embarking on a grand trip or who have actually done so. It flickers with the energy of real life, the roller coaster of human emotion, and the bravery to push oneself beyond one’s comfort zone.

Just looking at the pictures in this book gives readers a sense of the “great adventure” that occurred. Furthermore, it maintains interest and amusement throughout.

Author
The author, Pat Marquis, has a long and storied history of adventurous life out-of-doors whenever and wherever he could, with nearly 60 years of that time involving his equine friend, the horse. Starting as a 4-year-old being photographed on a Shetland Pony in front of his home in San Francisco, then continuing on his family’s 20 acres near Santa Rosa, where Pat wandered the fields, hiked hills, climbed trees, and most importantly…. learned to ride horses.

It was his Dad that showed Pat the delights of travelling on horseback while hunting in the hills of Northern California. And 15 years later as Pat and his wife, Rhonda, settled on 10 acres on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, Pat brought “Oklahoma Beth” onto the property to move logs to their cabin site. Thus their love and quest for adventure on horseback was started and has continued to this day.

After 10 years of horseback adventures in Alaska, hunting moose, avoiding brown bears and travelling old gold mining trails, the Marquis family sought greener pastures South. They are now settled on acreage in Central Oregon, with the Cascade and Ochoco mountains nearby, bringing access to many miles of riding their equine friends.

In the year 2015, Rhonda wished to pursue her dreams. Thousands of miles of horseback riding on the Pacific Crest Trail were awaiting, and only a plan and a great support team were needed to bring everything together, and “The Journey” began.
