Save the Children Statement on Title 42 Ruling

Washington, D.C. – WEBWIRE

After the Supreme Court ruling to let Title 42 expulsions, which were set to end last week, remain in place, Christy Gleason, Save the Children Vice President of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns, issued the following statement:

“We condemn this ruling, which is a disingenuous affront to our nation’s legal and moral responsibility to provide asylum protections to those seeking refuge within our borders. Seeking asylum is a basic human right, and many of the children and families looking to exercise this right are fleeing unimaginable violence and disasters in their home countries. Yet, Title 42 has denied them their right to safety for nearly three years. To continue to expel migrants under the guise of public health is incredibly disheartening – and morally wrong – especially when so many health experts and policymakers have discredited its impact. As Justice Gorsuch rightfully noted in his dissent, the public-health justification for Title 42 ’has lapsed’ and the current situation at the border has nothing to do with COVID-19.

“This country can – and must – do better. Enough is enough. It’s past time for this policy to end. We will continue to advocate against this policy, and work with policymakers on both sides of the aisle to ensure a future where all migrants and asylum seekers are welcomed with dignity and respect.”

Save the Children believes every child deserves a future. Since our founding more than 100 years ago, we’ve changed the lives of more than 1 billion children. In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share
