Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. It can be found in Puerto Rico and many other places across the Caribbean.

National Radon Action Month takes place across the United States each January. The aim of National Radon Action Month is to increase the public’s awareness of radon, promote radon testing and mitigation, and advance the use of radon-resistant new construction practices.

EPA believes that radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in this country, responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year. The agency estimates that nearly 1 out of every 15 homes has an elevated radon level (4 pCi/L or more).

Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. It can be found in Puerto Rico and many other places across the Caribbean. In fact, United States Geological Survey (USGS) data suggests some areas in Puerto Rico have the potential for high radon levels.

“Radon gets into the air people breathe as it makes its way up from the ground and accumulates indoors,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In some instances, radon can even enter a structure through well water. Since people cannot see, smell or taste radon, testing is the only option. This is why both the U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend testing homes, schools and businesses for radon. If elevated levels are detected, there are mitigation techniques that can be implemented to lower indoor levels.”

In Puerto Rico and across the region, Zimmetry Environmental has a licensed radon inspector that can test the indoor air or water from private wells. Several years ago, Zimmetry even sponsored an educational video about National Radon Action Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/SAOP0zz6yjo
