“And although we have experienced some of our friends passing, the memories live on, and the trees are still standing.” Robert Ross Williams

Robert Ross Williams’ “Woodlawn Giants” is an excellent example of what memoirs aim for in their readers: to evoke memories of significant experiences and to recall those intimate feelings associated with those events.

For the author, those memories are from his childhood years, what life was like growing up in West Memphis, Arkansas.

“Woodlawn Giants” begins by depicting the author’s father and a man named “Mr. Rick” planting some pine trees. These pine trees, all grown big and tall, still stands to this day; hence the name ‘Woodlawn Giants.’ These ‘Woodlawn Giants’ symbolize the childhood friends (now all grown-up men) the author grew up with and the kind of friendship built that has stood the test of time. The book continues to narrate some of the adventures the boys embarked on, such as the Florida Ball, snipe hunting, and attempting to jump the Ten-Mile Bayou.

Robert Ross Williams was born in 1960 in Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly after that, the family moved to West Memphis, Arkansas. The author fondly recalls how the place looked back then and all the changes in this city that natives jokingly refer to as “Left Memphis.” Readers are also introduced to the colorful and wonderful characters that helped shape the author’s life.

“Woodlawn Giants” is a charming narration of a bygone era, of what life was like back then growing up in West Memphis, effectively captured by Robert Ross Williams.
