An allergy alert and product recall was recently initiated by a company in California for imported cookies containing almonds and hazelnuts that are not identified as ingredients on the product packaging.

According to the announcement, posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), there has been a reported case of an allergic reaction to the product. The packaged cookies were sold in the company’s stores in California, Washington, Nevada, Texas, New York and New Jersey. The product has since been pulled from store shelves and consumers can return them for a refund.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods. The list includes tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, peanuts and soybeans. FALCPA applies to both domestically manufactured and imported packaged foods that are subject to FDA regulation.

“People that unknowingly consume a food or a beverage with an allergen that they are allergic to could experience anaphylaxis, a potentially deadly reaction,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This is why food allergen labeling requirements exist today. To protect those with food allergies and to help food manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers avoid costly product recalls, LA Testing’s scientists offer laboratory testing and labeling services for all types of foods and beverages.”
