Dirdura Wynn’s “The Very Hungry Bear” Teaches Respect and Righteousness

The story begins with a hungry bear leaving her sleeping area, searching for food. Bear passes a basket containing berries, lettuce, and carrots on her way to the stream and can’t help but consume the food inside. When she’s finished, Rabbit the owner of the basket comes back and screams at her. Bear apologizes and says: “I will replace the food”, but instead finds another basket and acts out again, by eating at Fox’s basket of food.

Birds warns Bear about her injustice acts and implore her to replace the food before heading to the stream to seek fish. Bear gathers food for Fox and Rabbit’s before eating enough fish at the stream to feed herself and the other bears. Is Bear going to accept the birds’ warning? Replete with adorable illustrations, this book will delight its young readers.

Learning to respect others is detrimental to a child’s upbringing, and nothing is worse than encountering an adult who doesn’t seem to grasp the concept. “The Very Hungry Bear” by Dirdura Wynn is a great bedtime and back-to-school read that lends itself well to character building. It’s a great introduction to stewardship and respecting all living things.
