Lead-based paints and dusts contaminated with lead are some of the most common sources of lead exposure for children.

Last month, the New York State Attorney General’s Office announced winning over $5 million in a lawsuit against a Buffalo-area landlord for alleged violations of lead safety laws that resulted in over two dozen reported cases of childhood lead poisoning.

“While no amount of money can reverse the damage he’s wrought, today’s landmark decision will fund invaluable lead poisoning prevention and abatement efforts throughout Erie County,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “Let this be a warning to all other landlords who would try to shirk their responsibilities: if you put children in harm’s way, my office will hold you accountable.”

Lead-based paints and dusts contaminated with lead are some of the most common sources of lead exposure for children. Unfortunately, many homes and properties built before 1978 still contain these paints. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are millions of households with children living in them that are being exposed to high levels of lead.

“Testing for lead can help to identify exposure risks in and around buildings so they can be safely removed or mitigated,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “This not only protects renters and tenants, these services also help to keep landlords and facility managers in compliance with health and safety regulations to avoid costly noncompliance penalties and potential lawsuits like the case in Buffalo.”

CTSI, with offices in New York and Florida that service clients nationwide, offers lead-based paint testing, consulting, and training services. Their EPA lead certified risk assessors and inspectors have successfully performed thousands of projects for landlords, facility managers, schools, universities, daycare centers, and other clients. CTSI’s services comply with the NYC Department of Health, HUD, and EPA guidelines to protect children, workers, and building occupants.
