FedEx Nurtures Sustainability Mindset Among Korean Youth

Boosts awareness on how to reduce carbon emissions among students


FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, is teaming up with non-profit organization, Korea Zero Waste Movement Network (KZWMN) —to launch an online Resource Circulation School aimed at spreading awareness on how to reduce the environmental impacts of plastic waste, including carbon emissions.

Through a series of educational videos, more than 1,700 students nationwide from 30 elementary, middle, and high schools will be educated on issues caused by plastic waste and given useful tips and guidelines on waste sorting and reduction. These simple steps can then be applied by students in their daily lives. In addition, students gain hands-on experience by creating their own upcycled items by re-using discarded everyday objects or materials such as paper boxes.

Waste generation is a significant concern in Korea, and the situation was exacerbated by the pandemic. According to the Ministry of Environment, the number of food deliveries in 2020 skyrocketed 75.1% from a year earlier, contributing to a 14.6% jump in the amount of plastic waste collected per day and the number of overall deliveries surged 19.8% on-year.[1]

FedEx is on its journey to achieve carbon neutral operations globally by 2040. Key steps toward reaching the carbon neutral goal include vehicle electrification, sustainable fuels, fuel conservation, and aircraft modernization. As part of this commitment, the new FedEx Incheon Gateway facility is a G-SEED (Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design)-certified building that generates renewable energy through 2,400 solar rooftop panels that supply approximately 19% of the facility’s energy needs per month.

This collaboration with Korea Zero Waste Movement Network is part of FedEx Cares, the company’s community engagement program with a goal to positively impact 50 million people worldwide before its 50th anniversary in 2023.
