The Latest Most Rat-Infested Cities List Includes Multiple Municipalities in California

Last month, Orkin released its latest list of the nation’s rattiest cities. Several major population centers in California made the list. The highest ranking Golden State city was Los Angeles (3^rd) followed by San Francisco (5^th) and San Diego (18^th). The list was compiled from new rodent treatments performed by the company from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2022.

The presence of rodents can lead to both property damage and health concerns for building occupants in infested properties. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases. These diseases can be spread to humans directly, through handling of rodents, through contact with rodent feces, urine or saliva, or through rodent bites. Diseases carried by rodents can also be spread to humans indirectly, through ticks, mites or fleas that have fed on an infected rodent.

“One of the many challenges of living with a rodent infestation is allergies,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Many people are allergic to rat and mice allergens, and for some asthmatics, exposure can even trigger an asthma attack.”
