“I enjoyed the storyline of this book. I could identify with some of the problems of the staff and residents in a mental health facility.” – Deborah, Amazon customer.

Jo Ellen Capps published her admirable fiction book “Laughter at Dawn,” which tells a story about Abigail (Abby) Thornton, a young woman with an intellectual disability and untreated mental illness.

Abby is abused in each of her foster homes before she finally ends up at Greenway Developmental Center. While Belle Farthing, the center’s director, spends every waking moment attempting to get rid of Abby, Abby’s hallucinations at Greenway force her to injure herself and others. Abby’s ordeal worsens, starting with a fire and ending with murder and strangulation. Abby’s psychologist, Sally McGraw, acts as her lawyer and advocate during the prolonged legal proceedings. Abby’s social worker, Christine Connelly, and Abby’s lawyer, Bart Bladsoe, work together to have Abby sue the Commonwealth of Virginia for not giving her a good place to live.

This story centers on the wrongs done to Abby, the staff’s political maneuverings and power struggles, the staff’s sexual misconduct, and the few staff members who show any degree of sympathy for her.

This book is based on the 37 years that Jo Ellen Capps worked as a social worker in the field of mental health. She has also used her knowledge of mental illness as a theme in many of her other books.
