Thousands of Imported Toys Recalled by a California Company Due to Phthalate and Lead Concerns

LA Testing offers consumer product and material testing services for phthalates, lead and other regulated substances to safeguard the public and to help keep companies in regulatory compliance.

Huntington Beach, California – WEBWIRE

Last month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of over 22,000 children’s butterfly net sets and more than 4,000 action figure playsets due to exposure concerns to phthalates and lead. The toys, imported from China by a company based in California, have also been recalled in Canada.

The butterfly net sets were sold online by a number of major retailers in the U.S. between September of 2017 and June of this year. The action figure playsets were also sold online with many of the same retailers from February of 2018 through June of 2022.

According to the CPSC recall notice:

Components of the recalled butterfly net sets and the action figure playsets contain levels of certain phthalates and lead that exceed the federal phthalate and lead content standards. Phthalates and lead are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues.

“Exposure to elevated levels of lead or phthalates is a concern for everyone, but this is especially true for children,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Lead poisoning can cause a number of serious health issues and while the health effects of various phthalate exposures are not completely understood, some are strongly suspected to be endocrine disruptors. Federal regulations restrict their use in certain child care articles and toys since children can easily be exposed to these chemicals by handling and chewing on items that contain them.”

Helping manufacturers, importers, retailers, regulatory agencies and health advocates across California test for phthalates, lead and other regulated substances are the scientists at LA Testing. Their material and product testing services protect consumers and can also be essential for helping companies comply with health and safety regulations to avoid these types of costly product recalls.
