Author Roger Bron Fik heats up the election year with “2033”

Given the heated atmosphere of party politics every (election) year, will America survive in the next ten, fifty, or so years? The newly-published author Roger Bron Fik gets readers wondering for answers through his political fiction book “2033” (RoseDog Books; 2022).

“2033” provides a healthy mix of political thriller, sci-fi, and even romance. The story takes place in a not-so-distant future, where a new technology, which combines artificial reality and the internet, is the craze. The Audio-Visual Imaging Device (AVID) is a helmet-like device that connects the user to the Internet. According to the author, “AVID rapidly replaced most forms of electronic communications. It became fashionable to walk around in your snug helmet-like connector with the visor up. The visor was the visual part of audio-visual.” In the book, the author calls AVID users “avideans” and “turtles.”

Of course, the AVID is a major background player in the unsettling sociopolitical atmosphere, in which America is somewhere divided between the Union States and the Council States. The protagonist of “2033” is Panter Colobasi, an “independent contractor” doing “background checks and surveillance” for Group A, a secret organization accused of highly illegal actions. As America gets caught up in another political upheaval, Panter finds time to strike up a romance with Chloe, who detects in him a rough nobility and allows him in her life.

Roger Bron Fik is a graduate of State University of New York at Buffalo, NY with degrees in mathematics and philosophy. Despite constant scribbling poems and short stories during and after his academic career, the author rationalized rejection by avoiding it. No submission, no rejection. So it is peculiarly ironic that the author’s very first submission of any kind should pass muster. Or, as seems more correct, “Pure dumb luck!”
