CTSI provides indoor air quality testing, monitoring, and consulting services to detect and mitigate potential exposure risks to airborne pollutants that could cause or aggravate respiratory conditions.

New York, NY – WEBWIRE

Many people recognize that keeping away from tobacco smoke is important, but there are numerous other airborne pollutants, allergens, and respiratory irritants that people with COPD and other respiratory conditions should avoid.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) reports that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death in America, affecting millions and causes long-term disability. Some 16 million Americans have the disease according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency goes on to share that millions more suffer from COPD, but have not yet been diagnosed.

COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, but CDC reports that 1 in 4 people with the disease have never smoked. Additional factors, such as exposure to airborne pollutants in the home, at work, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.

“Many people recognize that keeping away from tobacco smoke is important, but there are numerous other airborne pollutants, allergens, and respiratory irritants that people with COPD and other respiratory conditions should avoid,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “These include exposure to elevated levels of mold, bacteria, pollen, pet dander, dust mites, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter (PM) to name a few. The indoor air quality (IAQ) and industrial hygiene professionals at CTSI support National COPD Awareness Month as a time to raise awareness, assist those with the condition to avoid airborne pollutants, and help to prevent new cases.”

CTSI works with building owners and managers to identify and mitigate indoor exposure risks to a wide range of airborne pollutants. Their testing, monitoring, consulting, and training services are available to optimize indoor air quality conditions in commercial, industrial, institutional, educational, and healthcare facilities nationwide.
