NPR announced a new series from Embedded, its showcase for narrative documentary podcasts which dive deep into the most important stories of our time. Hosted by Kelly McEvers and Dan Girma and in partnership with The Marshall Project, Embedded: Changing the Police will take listeners inside the police department in Yonkers, NY, where the police chief works to change policing from within, while the federal government tries to push reform from the outside. The four-part series, which premieres on July 14, will explore whether true cultural change is possible in a police department with a history of misconduct. You can listen to the trailer here. New episodes will drop on Thursdays.

“In the Black Lives Matter era, people around the country are talking about what to do about policing,” said McEvers. “There have been calls to abolish and defund the police. And many police departments are promising to reform. But what does that even mean? We wanted to see if changing the police actually works.”

“After spending a year watching how police reform plays out in one city, we got to see just how deeply personal reform actually is in a community,” said Girma.

“This remarkable project marks the beginning of an ambitious new era for Embedded,” said Senior Vice President for Programming and Audience Development Anya Grundmann. “Moving forward, founding host Kelly McEvers will be presenting not only her own enterprise reporting, but also introducing a series of signature narrative projects from NPR and the NPR Network, which includes thousands of journalists at member stations across the country. Our goal is to elevate work that brings valuable insight and nuance to the national discourse and have millions of people benefit from it.”
