Kenny “Sad Papaw” Harmon makes better use of his internet fame to embark on a writing and publishing career. So far, he has published three books, one of which is “Sad Papaw’s Heritage” (Peppertree Press; 2021), which has made the rounds at different book events.
Harmon became an internet sensation in 2016 after his granddaughter, Kelsey, tweeted a photo of him looking disappointed after five of his six grandchildren skipped a cookout he had prepared for them. Kelsey was the only grandchild present at the cookout, although her brother, Kaleb, came later. To play a joke on her cousins, she took a candid photo of her Papaw eating and then shared the photo on Twitter. The rest is viral internet history.
The author wrote “Sad Papaw’s Heritage” with the help of Charlotte Hopkins, a freelance writer, and reporter for several publications. Hopkins reached out to him after the internet craze and offered to help him write a book. A few months later, he reconnected with her, saying he wanted to write a book about his family.
Harmon knew his family had some “interesting characters.” He told The Norman Transcript, “As I began to look into my family’s history further, I thought it was interesting enough to do a book.”
Harmon and Hopkins did a lot of research on Harmon’s family. The latter also talked to family members and museum curators and even found things that the family didn’t know about.
“The book touches on not only Harmon’s family history but also American history. It’s definitely worth the read,” said Hopkins. Their collaboration further led to the publication of two follow-up books, Sad Papaw’s “The Early Years” and Sad Papaw’s "Those Were The Days.”
“Sad Papaw’s Heritage” is about Harmon’s family living in Kentucky during the mid-1800s and their migration westward to Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Harmon invites his readers to revisit the early days of baseball, accompany the farmers as they struggle with hard work, doubts, and dreams of a new life in America, and experience the days when children first tasted graham crackers and peanut butter cookies. Readers will learn these stories and many others as they go through a time in America that will never be forgotten.
