Dennis Joiner exhorts readers to increase their awareness and sensitivities to the realities of America’s persisting race problem in his book “Let the Playing Field Level the Playing Field” (Newman Springs; 2021).
The author laments the uneven playing field that continues to create socioeconomic disparities between blacks and whites. It is no secret that for black Americans, there are still disparities in job promotions, employment and unemployment rates, educational access, healthcare access, and lack of competitive pay compared to whites. American society continues to see lasting consequences from years of unfair and unjust laws and practices that have held blacks back.
It is through this book on American society that the author hopes to help the reader to understand the purpose, misconceptions, descriptive assumptions, point of views, and the implication of racism and its raison d’etre, classism. The book is intended to describe America’s longing for a more perfect union and its frustration in achieving the metaphorical level playing field where no external influence affects the ability of the players to compete fairly and where all players play by the same rules.
In “Let the Playing Field Level the Playing Field”, the author provides specific answers to very specific questions regarding American society. He outlines how human suffering is caused by malefic conditions facilitated by white-instituted authority schemes and pleasure systems that tilt the playing field in favor of those who hold social power of wealth, authority, and influence.
“These authority schemes and pleasure systems are part of a complex white supremacy power system that are totally biased toward nonwhites,” wrote Joiner in the book’s prologue. “It is also based on lies about what whites are capable of doing and about what they may be disposed to do. Consequently. This pons asinorum of white authority schemes and pleasure systems has become a Gordian knot to progress.
“I think the only way to obliterate the knot is to expose the lies and render white authority schemes and pleasure systems irrelevant so that no adjustments will have any real positive result at all.”
The author believes that change may not happen tomorrow but sometime in the future. He believes science and technology will allow the playing field to level itself through dynamic transformative social epiphenomena. He acknowledges that this is obviously a complex phenomenon that requires a thorough understanding of America’s political socioeconomic playing field.
