What they saw in the 50s AD was emperor Nero of Rome, who was a parable of the man of sin who was persecuting the Hebrews, burning them at the stake, and throwing them to the Lions. Then there was the Insurrection of the Temple and destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Likewise, the author is seeing the mystery of iniquity today.

This same lawlessness and Rebellion is taking place right now. The weapons may have changed, but the results are the same. Chaos, disorder, violence, and confusion. Now two thousand years later, from everything the eyes can see, the mystery of iniquity will reach its “climax.”
