W. Clark Boutwell Will Have a Book Signing Event at the ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition 2022

In “Outland Exile: Book one of Old Men and Infidels” by W. Clark Boutwell, the world is becoming more and more aged but is also becoming younger. The United States is dead the Unity killed it.

After the wars and the Meltdown, The Unity now controls America from its citadel on the East Coast, leaving the outlands to savages and the changed vegetation.

The Unity, which provides free health care, full employment, computerless surfing of its massive CORE computer, and recreational drugs at quite reasonable prices, mandates retirement at the age of forty, preventing fatigue and error from contaminating a culture of youth, innovation, and vigor.

Lieutenant Malila Chiu is a seventeen-year-old, middle-aged and seasoned officer who, despite her well-deserved celebrity, finds her career in shambles.

Vandalism at a distant “sniffer” station prompts her demotion. Striving to avoid denunciation, Malila’s only alternative is to travel to the outlands and repair the station herself.

At first, the repairs appear go well. But after passing out from exhaustion, Malila wakes to discover that an ancient (but oddly, also middle-aged), disfigured savage named Jesse Johnstone has slain her platoon and now holds a knife to her throat, thereby making her the Outland Exile.

Born in Chicago and raised outside Philadelphia, Clark, a physician, has taught and practiced intensive care for newborn infants on four continents and eight countries, retiring after more than forty years on the job in 2020.

He has been an avid solo hiker, backpacker, and climber since he was a mere lad of eleven. Some of his stories are even true. He has traveled extensively to Rwanda, Kenya, India, Ecuador, Zambia, and Ghana as a volunteer mission physician.

“Outland Exile” (iUniverse, Oct 2015), “Exiles’ Escape” (Indigo River Feb 2018), and “Malila of the Scorch” are the trilogy centering on aging, medical care, drug use, cybernetics, society, and faith in a future dystopian America. A new trilogy is looking for an agent.
