Author D. Joseph Ziders delves into the private investigator/mystery genre with “Jeremiah Revel: The Blackguards of Charlatan”

An enjoyable read. No bull writing style (and with) great imagery. Fast-moving. There is no lack of action. These are the words that best describe the private investigator/mystery novel Jeremiah Revel: The Blackguards of Charlatan (Page Publishing; 2020) by D. Joseph Ziders.
 
The main character is Jeremiah Revel whom the author describes as, “The hero for those seeking the antihero—a maverick. He is his own contradiction. He practices the belief that there is wisdom in silence but speaks with authority when needed…He prefers acquaintances over friends. And the few friends he has are a motley crew of characters and con artists who live questionable lifestyles at best. But they are the only ones he can trust; he knows exactly who they are and what they are about.”
 
After quitting The City’s corrupt police force, Jeremiah Revel formed a private investigation firm called Rabbit Hole Private Eye Inc. The firm is contacted by a widow named Mrs. Billingsly, whose husband, a reporter, was abducted six years before from their home. Mr. Billingsly attempted to expose the abnormal property transactions of Happy Hal—the leader of the criminal underground organization known as The Harvest Union.
 
Although she was able to officially declare her missing husband legally dead, Mrs. Billingsly wants something to bury—a body—and to get closure for her sons and their families. When Jeremiah asks her if she thinks her husband is still alive, she replies, “I don’t know. I just want it over.”
 
Somehow, a simple investigation turns into an unlikely adventure of heartache and survival, of betrayal and revival, where beauty and darkness co-exist within the absence of light.
