Mary Nolan Brown’s “Picketing the President” will be displayed at the LA Times Festival of Books 2022

“Picketing the President: Delia’s Dilemma – Grandmother Nolan and the Suffragists” by Mary Nolan Brown will be displayed at the Los Angeles Times Festival of books on April 23-24, 2022, at the University of Southern California campus, Los Angeles, CA.

The story starts when Alice Paul of the National Woman’s Party invites Mary Nolan to return to Washington, D.C., to demonstrate for women’s right to vote once more. Mrs. Nolan eagerly accepts. Because of her age and health, her family agrees that she should be accompanied.

Everyone agrees, but no one is available except for granddaughter Delia, who has a poor relationship with her grandma. Her unspoken mission is to save her Grandmother from being imprisoned once more.

Delia is then presented to Army Captain Richard Manning on the way to Washington. The captain visits Delia in Washington, and despite Grandmother’s cold reception, a motorbike accident, and the possibility of separation, romance blooms. When Delia meets Alice Paul and other women at the NWP headquarters, her curiosity about the suffrage movement is piqued.

The book presents a behind-the-scenes look at the efforts made to secure women’s voting rights in America during President Woodrow Wilson’s presidency. The details come primarily from family heirlooms, such as letters and diaries kept by Delia’s great-grandmother, who was a significant participant.

Mary Nolan Brown, the great-granddaughter of Mary Nolan, is a native of Fernandina Beach, Florida, on Amelia Island, where five generations of her family have lived. She retired from a career in administration in public and private education and the Georgia Historical Society. She is a member of the Coastal Kids Writers & Illustrators, the Savannah Writers Circle, and the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators. She and her husband live near Savannah, Georgia, on Wilmington Island with their rescue cats, Georgia and Gracie.
