Ron Paliskis shares stories from his youth in Struthers, OH, a suburb of Youngstown, where steel producing was primay, but no more - in his memoir Ron: A Coke Alley Boy (Dorrance; 2021). He further goes on to an adventuous adult life.
The word coke has now become a short name for drug usage, but in this case [b"Coke Alley[/b" is given as the valley where the coke mentioned is the coal product used to help melt iron ore which is then used to create steel. Struthers is at the eastern end of about 30 miles of steel related industry along the Mahoning river which was used to cool mills. The wind being primarly west to east meant the smog like atmosphere ended up in his backyard, so to speak. The young men growing up in this area were called coke alley boys and formed an infomal group or gang.
Ron was an unusually ill child. He was born with Asthma, came very close to death from a ruptured Spleen in 1947, was overdosed with penicillin and went comatose in 1949, had throat cancer in 2011. surgery and radiation have eliminated it so far, then followed by many accidents , through his own carelessness and/ or stupidity. As if that wasn’t enough, he was slightly dyslexic and often stammered. But struggling through his misfortunes ,Paliskis has gone on to live a fulfilling life, even having himself quite an enjoyable time. He served in the USAF, where in 1964 at Anchorage he was in the middle of the strongest earthquake ever recorded to that time. Ron went on to excel in computer work, in fact becoming DP manager at several corporations.
