Behind the success of every man stands the love of a good woman. In the case of Guyanese-American retired RN Joseph Waddy, it is his mother, Bertha. He finds it the greatest honor to be her son and honors her through his autobiography, aptly titled “Bertha’s Son” (Outskirts Press; 2015).

Waddy wears the identity of being Bertha’s son as a badge of honor and seeks to immortalize her through his autobiography. It establishes not just his identity but his life. “Bertha’s Son” tells not just the story of his life, his journey to success, his trials and tribulations, but also the story of Bertha, the transformation of a woman to a mother, a mother’s love and sacrifice.

Due to a certain unfortunate event, Bertha gave birth to her son without a husband and a father. That did not discourage her to move forward in life and carve a better future for her son. She proved to be a better father as he grew up with her love and support, as well as of those who cared for him. Growing up, he will experience a lot of challenges and make hard decisions but always keep himself reminded of his mother’s love and resolve.
