“Not only a smoothly narrated slice of Midwestern Americana but an endearingly personal embodiment of a father through a daughter’s eyes.” – Mike Manglitz

“Van: A Memoir of My Father” by Kathryn Den Houter will be displayed at the Los Angeles Times Festival of books on April 23-24, 2022, at the University of Southern California campus, Los Angeles, CA.

This book presents the tale of one man’s life well lived, celebrating the greatness of an everyday life marked by obedience, faithfulness, and self-sacrifice. Ben was determined as a little boy on the Minnesota prairie that he wanted to be a lawyer when he grew up. He worked hard and enjoyed pulling pranks on his younger siblings.

He was enthusiastic, outgoing, and highly clever. He proceeded to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan after graduating from Western Christian High School in 1937. His future seemed bright.

After graduating from college, Ben enrolled in the US Navy, putting his courtship on hold and answered Uncle Sam’s call. He learned to fly, returned home safely, and used the GI Bill to enroll in law school after the war.

“Van” is an intimate account of one man’s ascent from humble beginnings to a life of grandeur that blessed everyone he encountered. The memoir was written by his daughter, Kathryn V. Den Houter.

This book highlights the life of a genuinely remarkable member of the Greatest Generation. It is an entertaining read for anyone who appreciates twentieth-century American history and the stories of the people who made this country great.

About the Author
Kathryn Den Houter had been actively writing since her retirement from her work as a psychologist in 2014. Her first novel, Van, A Memoir of Her Father, is a heartwarming tale of being raised by a father who was both courageous and down-to-earth. Her last novel, “Cobalt Chronicles,” has received three awards: Reader’s Favorite Award, Kops-Fetherling International Book Award, and a finalist in the Eric Hoffer Book Award.

The review of “Cobalt Chronicles” in The US Review of Books emphasizes Kathryn’s theme “…I do know that women need to be empowered by using the best tool available—education.” It further concludes that “‘Cobalt Chronicles’ contains a pervasive Christian message of hope and forgiveness for one’s enemies.” Kathryn holds to the maxim that “good stories heal.” According to her, these novels create a catharsis or a cleansing of a person’s inner soul. The result is a felt lightness of being.

Before she began writing, she had two careers that spanned forty-five years of work. Her first career was as a teacher, which included teaching in college, elementary school, middle school, and high school. Her last teaching experience was as a Directress in a Montessori School.

After completing a doctorate at Michigan State University in 1988, she developed and managed a psychological practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her most beloved career, however, was raising four children with her late husband, Leonard Den Houter, on a hobby farm near Lowell, Michigan. Her four children now have careers and families of their own, and she relishes the time spent with her seven grandchildren.

She has been married to Jim Jackway for thirteen years and lives in Caledonia, Michigan, in the summer and in Indian River County in Florida during the winter.
