America Tonight with Kate Delaney: Deidra Bynum, “Judah’s Tamar ‘In Her Shoes’ (Trials)”
Deidra Bynum’s special calling as an author
Make sure to listen to the entire interview.
Most Christians know the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Jonah, Job, and many others from the Bible. They’ve also read the Gospel stories of Jesus healing the sick, feeding the hungry, casting out demons, and welcoming sinners. But have they ever reflected on the minor characters of the Bible, particularly the women, and the impact they had on salvation’s history? What can Christians learn from their lives?
Author Deidra Bynum is the founder and CEO of the Titus 2:3 TCT Ministries (LLC). She is also the mother of two beautiful young adult daughters. Retired from Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, she relocated to North Carolina, where she, as led by the Lord, continues to write.
Bynum is on a special mission to help people reflect and explore some of the seemingly unimportant biblical characters and their contributions. Her anointed library, featuring “Unsung Characters of the Bible,” continues to produce stories that educate and enlighten readers all over the world. Over the years, she has published a growing number of books. Her first series, “Unsung Women of the Bible,” features “Jacob’s Leah (In Her Shoes), King David’s Abigail ’In Her Shoes’ (And Today’s Bride), Abram’s Hagar ’In Her Shoes’ (Diaries), and Judah’s Tamar ’In Her Shoes’ (Trials).” She is currently working on her fifth book, “Samson’s Delilah Dilemma ’In Her Shoes’ (Confessions).”
Just in time for the International Women’s Month celebration, Bynum was a guest on Kate Delaney’s nationally syndicated radio talk show “America Tonight” to talk about her book, “Judah’s Tamar ’In Her Shoes’ (Trials).”
In her book, the author shares a modern retelling of the story of Tamar, which can be found in the Bible’s Book of Genesis, chapter 38. She explained the structure and premise of her book, combining her storytelling prowess and experience in law enforcement.
Deidra shares, “Part One" of the book is written in the form of a mock trial. As a former police officer, part of my job required me to testify in court.
As written in the book’s summary, the unfolding of Tamar’s story reveals a time when surrogacy was strongly encouraged in families to continue their lineage. In the event of the death of a husband, if the deceased had other immediate male relatives, it was lawfully expected that the next-in-line kin would step in and assume the role of husband to the young widow, to provide an
heir for the departed.
However, in Tamar’s case, after the death of her husband, things did not go accordingly. At the center of it all was her father-in-law, Judah. Cooperating with biblical history, uniquely, Felecia, a created character, translates a version of this story, using today’s vernacular. Be prepared, as Tamar takes Judah to court"
Writing Judah’s Tamar, Bynum took into mind the phrase, “There is nothing new under the sun,” which is attributed to King Solomon, to retell the story of Tamar in a way today’s readers can relate to. In fact, the story serves as a metaphor for the treatment of women in society –an issue that is as old as prostitution, which factored in Tamar’s story.
“You pretty much know how women are,” Bynum told her host. “Basically, I wrote the first part of the book, about this unsung woman of the Bible and her plight. The second part of the book features a collection of modern-day stories of women and how we relate to one another. In ancient days, women were seen as property, however, God viewed them then, and us now as His beloved daughters.”
Deidra’s “In Her Shoes” collection is a planned seven-book series. The author will follow up with an “In Their Shoes” series, filled with stories of other women, and men of the Bible.
