5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DEATHLOOP

⦁    The Hero: DEATHLOOP’s protagonist is Colt, an amnesiac who wakes up every day the target of a manhunt on the chaotic island of Blackreef. He has no idea who he is; why he’s stuck on this frigid, isolated island; why people seem to know him… Progressing through DEATHLOOP means uncovering not only the island’s secrets, but the secrets of Colt’s past. For better or worse, Colt is determined to figure out who he really is and why he’s here.

⦁    The Catch: Every day is the same thanks to a mysterious timeloop that has Blackreef and all its inhabitants – The Eternalists – living in an endless cycle that resets every day. To break the cycle and escape the island, Colt will have to get his hands dirty and eliminate the eight people responsible for maintaining the timeloop, but he only has 24 hours to kill all eight or the loop resets.

⦁    The Hitlist: The eight “Visionaries” responsible for maintaining the loop won’t be easy to take out. Colt will have to use the loop to his advantage as he learns the Visionaries’ routines and schedules – where they’ll be and when – in order to manipulate the island to his advantage. It will be impossible to take all of the Visionaries out in one day if you try to do it one by one. To accomplish the feat, you’ll have to move them around like pieces on a game board until the puzzle comes together in one beautiful loop of death.

⦁    The How: By any means necessary. As Colt loops, he’ll discover new paths, learn more secrets and grow stronger. Armed with an arsenal of powerful weapons and devastating abilities, he’ll sneak, shoot, stab, and sabotage his way through Blackreef’s murderous citizens. By spending Residuum – a resource earned by exploring and taking out targets – you’ll be able to keep your weapons, abilities and upgrades between loops, so you won’t have to start from scratch every time. Once you’ve got the hang of the island’s layout and how events at different times of day affect each district, you can move on to researching your targets. If you want to take out all the Visionaries, you’ll have to get clever. Pick your target. Watch them. Listen to what they say. Read their communications. Follow the clues, and eventually you’ll have everything you need to solve DEATHLOOP’s “murder puzzle.”  

“The murder puzzle was at the heart of Deathloop’s conception,” says Campaign Designer Dana Nightingale. “The Visionaries of Blackreef are stuck in a pattern, loop after loop, without fail. A player who charges in can easily fall into the same trap, repeating the same actions loop after loop. The key to breaking the loop is to break these patterns. The player must try new things, investigate leads, make discoveries and gain knowledge. With this knowledge, you can break the patterns the Visionaries are set in, and by doing that in just the right places, break the loop.”

⦁    The Hunter: Among the eight targets is the true antagonist of this story – the clever and lethal Julianna Blake. Where Colt is mysterious because he knows nothing about himself, Julianna is an enigma because she knows everything about everything, and she keeps all those cards tucked carefully up her sleeves. When you know everything, sometimes the most fun you can have is playing your winning cards while laughing in your opponent’s face. Her number one goal is to put an end to Colt’s mission and protect the timeloop. As savvy as she is deadly, Julianna is more than ready to go head-to-head with Colt. Be sure to stay on your toes, because unlike the other NPC targets, Julianna could be another player breaking into your game to make trouble. 

“Colt wakes up on this island, and this woman is clearly the reason why everyone on the island wants to kill him,” says Game Director Dinga Bakaba. “She should be his enemy, but she keeps contacting him over his radio. Julianna seems fascinated by him and interested in what he’s doing and how he’s doing. This fascination goes both ways because everyone is on a schedule and everyone keeps forgetting, except for her. Julianna is with Colt every step of the way. They share a lot in common, they just have very, very opposed goals.”

MULTIPLAYER

The Switcheroo: While Colt’s single-player journey is the main focus in DEATHLOOP, if you’re feeling particularly devious you can switch things up and take on the role of Julianna and sneak into another player’s campaign to cause some chaos. DEATHLOOP’s unique PvP mode pits its protagonist and antagonist against each other in a battle of wits, weapons and supernatural abilities.

“Whether you’re playing as Colt or Julianna, you’re facing off against someone that is dangerous and driven,” says Bakaba. “The ultimate test of the game is playing against someone that is as strong as you and trying to outsmart them or overpower them, depending on what your playstyle is"
