Louis McCall Explores the Life and Legacy of Obed-Edom, a Minor Character in the Bible

What do believers and historians know about the Ark of the Covenant? And what do they know about the person whose house became a temporary resting place for the Ark, as told in 2 Samuel 6:10–11 and 1 Chronicles 13:13-14? “He Chose the Glory” tells two intertwined tales. One account tells the history of the Ark of the Covenant and its ultimate disappearance, as a transition to the new covenant in the blood and body of Jesus Christ. The other account tells the story of Obed-Edom, his family, clan, and their descendants.
 
“I wrote this book because the Holy Spirit wouldn’t let me walk away from the life and legacy of Obed-Edom,” said McCall. “That is strange because I have never once heard a sermon on Obed-Edom.”
 
Who is Obed-Edom? Due to an act that provoked God’s wrath, King David became afraid and unable to complete the transportation of the Ark to the City of David, his citadel in Jerusalem. He placed the Ark in the nearby home of a man named Obed-Edom, a Levite, where it remained for three months. During the three months that the Ark was in the possession of Obed-Edom, the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household. When David saw that God had blessed Obed-Edom rather than curse him, his fear of transporting the Ark disappeared, and he went once again to retrieve the Ark properly (1 Chronicles 15:25).

Author Biography
 
Louis McCall was born in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Northwestern University, where he received a PhD in political science. Later, he also attended the National War College of the National Defense University. Louis was an Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University in the Department of Political Science prior to a thirty-six-year career in the U.S. Department of State, first as a Foreign Service officer and then as a foreign affairs Civil Service employee where he served as Consul General in Florence, Italy, Chargé d’Affaires in Brunei, U.S. Representative to the Republic of San Marino, and Assistant Inspector General. He lived in or worked in, at least temporarily, more than sixty countries on six continents.
 
Whether in academia or as a diplomat, Louis found opportunities to live his faith, including part-time ministry of the good news in word and in song, including co-laboring with missionaries, national church leaders, and the underground church. In his final two years at the Department of State, he organized and led the National Day of Prayer observances in the Department.
