The Power Plant expands its team as part of new organizational strategy on the cusp of 35th anniversary

Announcing the appointment of Adelina Vlas as Head of Exhibitions & Publications, and Liz Stanwyck as Head of Development

The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery announces the appointment of new staff members to its management team as the thought-provoking arts institution celebrates its 35th anniversary in May 2022. 

Adelina Vlas has joined as the new Head of Exhibitions & Publications, and Liz Stanwyck is now the Head of Development. Both leaders bring considerable international and Canadian arts and cultural management experience to the organization. Vlas and Stanwyck report to Gaëtane Verna, who celebrates her 10-year term as the Director & Artistic Director of The Power Plant this month. Under Verna’s visionary leadership, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery continues to be Canada’s leading non-collecting, public art gallery dedicated exclusively to contemporary visual art from Canada and the world.  

About Adelina Vlas
Before joining The Power Plant as the Head of Exhibitions & Publications, Adelina Vlas was the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Since 2014, she has organized special exhibitions and collection-based shows such as As If Sand Were Stone: Contemporary Latin American Art from the AGO Collection (2017); and special exhibitions such as Hito Steyerl: This Is The Future (2019) and Haegue Yang: Emergence (2020). She was also the in-house curator for Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors (2018).  

Previously, Vlas held curatorial positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Canada. Over the last 15 years, she has organized projects with international acclaimed artists including Carlos Amorales, Valérie Blass, Mohamed Bourouissa, Martha Colburn, Manon de Boer, Kara Hamilton, Brian Jungen, Liz Magor, Michael Snow, Fiona Tan and Tobias Zielony. Adelina started her professional career in 2001 at The Power Plant as a curatorial apprentice. 

About Liz Stanwyck
Liz Stanwyck brings more than 18 years of experience in relationship, event, and project management to The Power Plant team as the Head of Development. 

Previously, Stanwyck held leadership roles at acclaimed arts organizations in Canada and the United States, including Luminato, The Getty, American Film Institute (AFI), Royal Ontario Museum, Canadian Screen Awards, as well as consulting roles with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, New York Film Festival, CalArts and most recently Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Stanwyck has a successful track record of aligning innovative fundraising programs with donor objectives. 

About Gaëtane Verna
Gaëtane Verna is an art historian and arts administrator. Since March 2012, she has been the Director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto, and was Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Musée d’art de Joliette from 2006 to 2012. Prior to her appointment at Joliette, Verna served as Curator of the Foreman Art Gallery at Bishop’s University (1999–2006), Sherbrooke, while also teaching in the Art History department of both Bishop’s University and the Université du Québec à Montréal.  

Verna is one of the initiators of the Black Curators Forum, she is a member of the advisory committee of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Arts of Global African and the Diaspora as well as being a member of the Advisory Board of The Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery at NSACAD University.  

Verna is a member of the Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization (CAMDO), the International Association of Art Critics, AICA Canada, and the International Committee for Museums (CIMAM). In 2017, she was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government to spotlight and recognize her significant contribution to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world.
