WEBWIRE

Follow Teddy Sato’s journey and his determination to come back to his real home.

“Home” by Helen Oyakawa will be featured in the LA Times Festival of Books on April 23-24, 2022, at the University of Southern California campus, Los Angeles, CA.

This book starts when Japan destroyed Pearl Harbor, and talk spread that the US government would deport all persons of Japanese descent on the West Coast to detention camps deep inland. Teddy Sato’s father wanted freedom for his family and legally escaped imprisonment by enlisting them as Oklahoma sharecroppers. Within three years, the camp inmates were freed, and the war was over for them by the fourth year. But an entire decade later, the Satos were still obligated to work on the farm, far from home.

Now in sixth grade, Teddy decided to return to California, their true home. But how would it happen? Papa died, and Mama denied welfare for herself and her seven children. The drought continued, and their obligations mounted. Teddy was tenacious and would not give up. Want to know what happens next?
