Sometimes in basketball, size or height does not matter but faith and tenacity can be more important than talent. Christian author Brenda Leigh hopes to pass this message to her readers, particularly young adults, through her book “Winner’s Creed” (Westbow Press; 2019).
“Winner’s Creed” is a young adult sports story abounding with the themes of dreams and hopes, vocation, faith, play, courage, and perseverance, with basketball serving as the primary metaphor. It tells the story of Christy Rivers, a young Christian girl who aspires to play for the Lady Lions basketball team despite different adversities.
“‘Winner’s Creed’ was inspired by a poem I found on a book marker soon after I started teaching, called A Winner’s Creed, author unknown,” Leigh wrote on her blog. “I kept a copy of the poem on the filing cabinet in my classroom, one beside my computer at home, and read it often. I remember sending a copy in a letter to my son as he went through basic training.
“As I taught, I encourage my students to have a positive attitude about learning math, not to give up, and dare to believe you can accomplish your goals.”
Christy is determined to become a Lady Lion in her senior year, which is her last chance to do so. Standing at 5 feet 4 inches, Christy displays an indomitable spirit and does not let her short stature stop her from wanting to join the basketball team. What she lacks in height, she makes up for her outside shooting and free throws, and she practices incessantly to improve her shooting.
Another issue also keeps Christy off the court. The Lady Lions’ star player Liz Parker doesn’t want Christy on the team. When a new coach takes the helm of the team, Liz begins a campaign to cause problems that may keep Christy’s dreams from coming true. Liz will go to almost any length to get Christy off the team.
Will Christy be able to wear the Lady Lion uniform? Will she and Liz reconcile? Follow Christy’s journey to making it to the team in Brenda Leigh’s Winner’s Creed.
“Winner’s Creed” will be displayed by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at their exhibit for the 2022 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on April 23-24, 2022, at the University of Southern California campus, Los Angeles, CA.
