Vicki Burris Risbeck, the author of “A Lens View ~ Family” (BookBaby, 2021), will be featured at the LA Times Festival of Books in Spring 2022.
The book tells the story of a ten-year-old boy, Daxter E. Roland, who loves eating, playing soccer, playing games on his tablet, and most of all, being with his friends and family. Dax explains that he and his sister Isabella have two homes, due to their parent’s divorce. At first, not being with both parents all the time is tough on him, but eventually Dax comes to be content living in both homes. His father remarries, and now there is a baby on the way. While Dax is excited to get a new brother or sister, he overhears his father and stepmother talking about a soon-to-be complicated family tree and does not understand. Confused, he consults his Papaw, a retired photographer who likes to take pictures to help explain life lessons through a lens view. With the help of Papaw’s gift of photography, Dax sees how families can look diverse ways, and how family trees are important in understanding the past, present and future.
The picture book instructs children and adults alike that even if parents are separated by divorce, “family is family.” When it comes to blended or complicated family relationships, it is sometimes hard to explain to children how, who, or what they are a part of. “A Lens View ~ Family” teaches them these different relationships, while leading them to make connections with everyday, familiar objects and concepts.
Overall, this is an insightful read for children that uses full-color illustrations and photographs to capture a difficult and relevant subject for today’s youth. Because reading aloud to children is critical for developing a love of reading, “A Lens View ~ Family” was written as a read-aloud but can readily stand alone as a self-read. Interested?
