New Study Examines Common Contaminants from Domestic Water Wells in California

LA Testing offers laboratory services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify a wide range of chemical and microbial contaminants from water samples.

A study by scientists from UC Berkley and UCLA was recently published in the American Journal of Public Health that examined domestic water wells in California for three common contaminants. According to the researchers, an estimated 370,000 California residents that are dependent on domestic wells for their drinking water are possibly being exposed to high levels of nitrate, arsenic, or hexavalent chromium.

In California, nitrate is principally a by-product of nitrogen use in fertilizer for agricultural purposes. Its presence in groundwater can also come from septic systems, confined animal feeding operations and from treated wastewater according to the California Water Boards.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that arsenic can enter the water supply from natural deposits in the earth or from industrial and agricultural pollution. It is widely believed that naturally occurring arsenic dissolves out of certain rock formations when ground water levels drop significantly.

The California Water Boards reports that much of the low level hexavalent chromium found in drinking water is naturally occurring, reflecting its presence in geological formations throughout the state. However, there are areas of contamination in California from historic industrial use, such as the manufacturing of textile dyes, wood preservation, leather tanning, and anticorrosion coatings, where hexavalent chromium contaminated waste has migrated into the underlying groundwater.

“This study only looked at a few of the many potential contaminants people in California should be aware of,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Many of the people dependent on domestic wells live in rural and agricultural parts of the state. Exposure to any of the three contaminants can cause a variety of health concerns. Fortunately, California residents can turn to LA Testing for a wide range of chemical and microbial testing services. With multiple laboratories, we also provide sampling supplies and even offer easy-to-use test kits.”
