Anthony Toomer’s Poetry Book Gives Readers “A Poetic Spanking”

“A Poetic Spanking: Say His Name, Loving You, Can You Feel Me Now” (Archway; 2021) by Anthony Toomer is a volume of free verse that explores faith, love, and societal woes while encouraging believers to build a lasting relationship with God. He interweaves personal experiences and current events with introspective observations that lead others on a journey through his path through life as an African-American man.

“A Poetic Spanking” is divided into three parts. The first part, “Say His Name,” tells the story about God and what He expects from His children. In his interview on Kate Delaney’s syndicated radio program America Tonight, he said, “It tells you about what you have to do in life to be rewarded with everlasting life because basically, that’s why Jesus came to forgive our sins.”

The second part, “Loving You,” discusses the ups and downs of love. This includes love-lost, love-found, and love-rescued. “We know that love can go both ways but it’s a beautiful thing in the beginning. Love can sometimes hurt and people have to be prepared for that too"

The third part, “Can You Feel Me Now” explores social injustice, which is prevalent in the American Black community. The author calls for justice and an end to this ignorance.

Anthony Toomer has been writing poems since he was in junior high school. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He is married and has two sons. He has a two-year associate degree in Data Processing and has served 6 ½ years in the US Army Reserves. Retired now, he spent 33 years with the New York City Transit Authority as a token clerk, a train conductor, and a train operator. His hobbies include playing poker, old-school music like Motown, and sports. His favorite vacation destinations are the Caribbean and Las Vegas.
