“The Kingpins of Riverbend” is set in a fictional town along the Mohawk River in upstate New York in 1968. It is about a group of seven pinboys at a local bowling alley who, in one way or another, are confronting their futures against the backdrop of a dying town desperately trying to recapture the prosperity of the past.

The corrupt town boss, Tony Gallo, wants to replace the old downtown with a new indoor mall that he hopes will revive the city, but mostly line his pockets with money. He comes up with the idea of having Riverbend’s top bowler square off against the PBA bowling champion, P.G. Peckham, in the match of the century. The book weaves between the efforts of Gallo and the lives of the pinboys, with both stories coming together in a surprise ending.
