“Galway the Irish Cob Cow Horse” by Jean Heidker will be featured Festival of Books in 2022
Just because you’re different doesn’t mean you need to give up, it just means you try a little harder.
The children’s book “Galway the Irish Cob Cow Horse” (BookBaby; 2021) by Jean Heidker will be featured at the LA Times Festival of Books in Spring 2022. This book tells the story of an Irish Cob horse named Galway. The story begins with Galway arriving at his new home and wanting to do something different than the other horses.
Galway discovers that unlike the other Irish Cobs, he wanted to work cattle. Even though that was different, his owner respected that and taught him how to be very good at it. When he went to a show to compete working cattle, all the other horses laughed and made fun of him because he was so different from them. He had larger feet and was in general a much stockier horse.
However, when a little girl needed to be rescued, he showed that he not only could be a cow horse just like them, but he also had extra skills that made it possible to get her to safety.
“Galway the Irish Cob Cow Horse” shows not to judge everything or everyone by what you see. It teaches children not to judge people based on their appearance. Heidker strongly highlights this to remind both adults and children that everyone is born with their own unique set of abilities, just as Irish Cob horses are each individual and each have a unique set of talents. Jean wants to instill these values in children because she believes every person or animal should have the right to display the talents they have. Just because Galway is an Irish Cob doesn’t mean he couldn’t do what he loved doing while also showing what a great human animal bond can do to make a great team.
