Could solar geoengineering help address climate change? Read the novel to find out.

Sam Bleicher was one of the many authors who participated in The Festival of Storytellers Season 2 that took place virtually on November 8-21, 2021, as a featured speaker, talking about his novels and the need to address climate change, among other topics in his Live Author Sessions and Author of The Hour Session.

Bleicher’s novels, “The Plot to Cool the Planet: A Novel” and “Guardians of the Solar Shield: Earth’s Climate Mirrors Under Attack 2029-37” are both built around using solar radiation management to mitigate some of the possible effects of climate change. Through his climate fiction, he wants his audience to understand and care about climate change. “I just want to get people to think about something different to address this problem,” Bleicher said in his Featured Author session.

The author took considerable pains to create a title and subtitle for “Guardians of the Solar Shield.” He told author Luthie M. West, the moderator of his Author of The Hour session: “I didn’t want people to think that this book was about some fantasy world, an animated cartoon, or anything of the sort. So I spent a lot of time on the title, and I finally ended up with this one.

“When I looked up what else is online, I realized I needed to do something more to differentiate my book from other books. The whole idea about climate mirrors is the central point of the story, so I subtitled it for that purpose.”

Through Guardians of the Solar Shield, Bleicher sends a clarion call to society to do something in the way of solar geoengineering to reflect some of the sunlight that comes into the earth back into space so that the planet does not heat up so quickly, which will slow the pace of the damage. That is the message he wants to communicate to his audience.

“First of all, I want to educate them about climate change and solar geoengineering as a possible step to lessen some of the inevitable damage.

“The second thing is to open people’s minds to what sound like crazy ideas, namely that we’re going to put chemicals in the atmosphere or satellites in space that will reflect some of the sunlight back into outer space.

“There are other ideas, such as brightening the clouds by putting more salt into the air so that we get more clouds, which will reflect more sunlight.”

What has become of these plans to reflect the sunlight back into space?

“The scientists haven’t been able to begin research tests to see if any of these ideas will work,” said Bleicher, “because there are already opponents who think it’s too dangerous to change Mother Nature - as if we haven’t been changing Mother Nature for the last 250 years.”

Climate thrillers such as “Guardians of the Solar Shield: Earth’s Climate Mirrors Under Attack 2029-37” by Sam Bleicher will help introduce the possibility of solar geoengineering as a technology that could reverse human-caused climate change.
